Lets kick this off with a question.
Do you use LinkedIn ?
Followed closely by, do you think I use it ?
For a long time I have had a page and have struggled to keep track of it or spin it into the right persona I wish people to view. I am really lost on what to expect. Lets just say, this platform has not always been my favourite. I could probably show people what to do and how to do it, but its not something I offer because I’m not ace at it, yet.
Just the other night I tried putting my kids to bed. We all have busy lives. My was contracted by a LinkedIn masterclass that I could not attend as I needed to spend time with my kids. Ironically, my experience with children and schools has always been difficult to balance on places like LinkedIn.
After the battle (putting children to bed, in a calm fashion), I sat down and was not surprised to see I missed the online seminar. I did however manage to take a quick look at my account and felt pushed into doing that thing where you email everyone in your contacts. Its easy, just takes a few seconds.
minutes later I received an email. It was from an old link. This person has had the most interesting life I have ever …. ever heard about. In terms of business, they made it more than once. They also made a few mistakes. Their message was very simple. It was a hello, how are you and hope you are well. So i replied. The end of the email was a very warm thank you. They didn’t want to be on LinkedIn as they have retired but was happy to email me. I’m actually shocked when people say anything nice. It always warms me and touched me.
The Flood Gates
So, the morning after, I’m lagging behind and remember that I need to dip into my emails and then have a ‘peek’ at LinkedIn. Note. Not a look or spend some time. Just a peek. As you are reading this, I have chosen to write this blog post instead of go there. This is because my emails tell me that I already have one person who has commented.
Someone has already commented or messaged me back! They said something like, i met you at one of your events you ran and thought they were good. They said they valued what I offered them and thank you. Again, shocked that anyone remembers what I do. Im just honest and humble (possibly don’t get out much either).
Peeking At LinkedIn
As I’m looking, I’m going to write what I can see. This needs to be quick as im on a short deadline here. The fist thing I can see is that I have one comment, two flags and one plus person. The comment is from the person I’ve already talked about.
Ive made a massive mistake in not updating or looking at my profile first. The flag icon, notifications, says that 15 people viewed my profile. Wait whilst I find my dunce hat. Followed by 27 new connections. Truly mad. Wow. So clearly has been some time ago I used this.
The add person in just one person. The off thing here is that I know them. My best mate got married to her and she’s really nice and far too smart. So, even this person is connected to me.
I’m afraid I need to dip out of here but really do think I need to update my profile. The area where people have viewed your profile is great but equally a sales tool deployed by LinkedIn. I think the best thing I could do now is to plan some time on here. Albeit some planned time to work on my profile and communicating to my networks.
This is as always, a raw blog post. This will also be placed on LinkedIn along with a message to all my new links, linking to the blog post. The lesson we ( I ) need to learn here is that we must plan our time across social media and ensure we are sustaining the same level of persona and personality on all platforms. I don’t need to be on this platform but have chosen to be as it probably related to a demographic. What I need to do is work this into my routine. I also need to make things a bit more perfect before I start pushing things out there.
If this blog post has resonated with you, please comment, or contact me or tweet! Im thinking of going back to the seminar hosts website to read a blog post or two. Heres the link if you are interested.
